Research in Action: "By your leave, wax: Letterlocking on the Shakespearean Stage"

  • Shakespeare's Globe, Sam Wanamaker Playhouse 21 New Globe Walk Bankside London SE1 9DT England (map)

Synopsis

Shakespeare and his contemporaries took letter security seriously. With the help of two experts in the lost art of ‘letterlocking’, Jana Dambrogio and Dr Daniel Starza Smith, we’ll investigate the ways that material letters communicate on stage beyond their written contents. Attendees will receive model early modern letter-packets to discuss and take away.

Background

Our research workshops give you a chance to be part of the Globe’s exploration of early modern and contemporary performance culture.

Using extracts from well-known and less-familiar plays, Globe actors and leading academics uncover and question the practices of the Shakespearean stage. Expect discoveries – and expect to be asked for your feedback.
